Ridge Rundown is an editorial guide to outdoor equipment: hiking boots and trail shoes, layering and insulation, rain shells, packs and load carrying, tents and shelters. We write about how gear is built, how to match it to the weather and terrain you actually go out in, and how to repair it instead of replacing it.
If you are buying your first serious piece of kit, or replacing something that never worked, these are the guides we point people to first. Each one starts from materials and conditions rather than from a brand.
Base layer, mid layer, shell. Fit and order matter more than the labels on the garments, and most cold-weather failures are a layering problem rather than a clothing-quality problem.
Footwear, shells and shelters are the three categories where a wrong decision costs the most money, so they are where we started. Packs and insulation are covered in the full list.
Capacity is the least useful number on a pack's specification. What matters is whether the harness can move the weight onto your hips and keep it there on a long descent.
A shell that wets out and a boot with a worn rand are usually repairable. We cover washing, re-proofing and when a repair stops being worth the money.
We do not run a laboratory and we do not publish test scores. What we do is read carefully, compare like with like, and explain the reasoning so you can check it yourself. Every guide on the site is built from four kinds of evidence.
Where something cannot be checked - an unverifiable durability claim, a temperature rating with no stated method - we say so instead of repeating it. We do not publish sponsored reviews, and no brand sees a guide before it goes live.
We start with the numbers a brand publishes - weight, denier, fill power, volume - and with the standard each number was measured against. Where a figure is quoted without a method, we treat it as marketing rather than data.
Face fabric, membrane, insulation, foam, sole compound, buckles and zip quality. Material choice explains most of the difference between two items that look identical in a product photo and cost very different amounts.
How a company handles a failed zip, a delaminated membrane or a worn sole says more about whether gear lasts than any feature list. We look at whether spares exist, whether repairs are offered, and what is excluded.
We read long-term accounts from people who have used the same item for several seasons, and we look for agreement between them. A single report is an anecdote; several that describe the same failure point is a pattern.
Everything we have published so far, newest first. Each guide explains the reasoning behind a recommendation so you can apply it to gear we have never mentioned.
All guides →Every article explains how a piece of gear is built, which conditions it suits and where it tends to fail - so the recommendation still makes sense when a specific model is discontinued.
